Carpet Installation Cost in Mokena and Chicago’s SW Suburbs (2026)
HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts carpet installation at $2 to $8 per square foot installed nationally, with the carpet, the pad, and the labor counted in that number. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Below is what those figures cover, what a 12 by 12 room or a full staircase adds up to at national rates, and the line items that turn a cheap-looking quote into an expensive one.

Carpet Installation Cost Per Square Foot in 2026
Here is how HomeGuide’s national figures break into pieces. The breakdown matters because two quotes for the same carpet can differ widely when one of them leaves a row out.
| Line item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet (material only) | $1.00 to $4.50 per sq ft | Grade has the biggest effect on price. Wool runs higher. |
| Carpet pad | $0.25 to $1.00 per sq ft | Density and thickness matter more than brand. Skimping here shortens carpet life. |
| Installation labor | $0.50 to $1.50 per sq ft | Tack strip, power stretching, seaming, and trimming. |
| Tear-out and haul away | $0.70 to $1.60 per sq ft | Old carpet and pad, disposal included. Sometimes bundled, often a separate line. Always ask. |
| Stairs | $10 to $25 per step | Basic box stairs. $20 to $45 per stair where a handrail has spindles. |
| Transitions and thresholds | $25 to $100 each | Where carpet meets tile, wood, or luxury vinyl. |
| All in, installed | $2 to $8 per sq ft | Carpet, pad, and installation labor. |
Carpet Cost by Room Size
Multiply the room’s length by its width to get the square footage, then compare it with HomeGuide’s national figures for common room sizes below. One caveat: carpet usually comes in rolls 12 to 15 feet wide (HomeGuide, checked October 2026), so a room wider than the roll needs a second strip and a seam, and it costs more per square foot than a room the roll covers in one piece. That is roll width, not markup.
| Space | Square feet | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|---|
| 10 by 12 room | 120 sq ft | $200 to $900 |
| 12 by 12 room | 144 sq ft | $250 to $1,100 |
| 12 by 15 room | 180 sq ft | $300 to $1,400 |
| 15 by 15 room | 225 sq ft | $400 to $1,700 |
| 20 by 20 room | 400 sq ft | $700 to $3,000 |
| Flight of 13 stairs | per flight, landing included | $150 to $600 |
| Several rooms | 1,500 sq ft of carpet | $2,600 to $11,200 |
What Is Included in Carpet Installation, and What Is Not
The word “installed” means different things to different sellers. Confirm which of these sits inside each number you compare.
- Usually included: new tack strip, power stretching, seaming, trimming, and cleanup.
- Sometimes included, often not: the pad. An advertised install price with no pad in it is not a real price.
- Frequently extra: tearing out and hauling away the old carpet and pad, moving furniture, disposal fees.
- Almost always extra: stairs, quoted per step rather than by area.
- Extra when needed: subfloor repair, squeak fixes, leveling, and door undercutting when a thicker pad raises the floor height.
- Extra by design: transition strips at every doorway where carpet meets another floor type.
Tear-out is easy to overlook. HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts removing and disposing of old carpet and pad at $0.70 to $1.60 per square foot, which works out to $700 to $1,600 on a 1,000 square foot second floor. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing.
Carpet Fiber Types and What Each One Costs
Fiber is the biggest single lever on price. Here is the plain version.
- Olefin (polypropylene): the entry band. Bleach cleanable and moisture friendly, which is why it shows up in loop and berber styles and in basements. It also mats faster than anything else here.
- Polyester (PET): a soft feel at a modest price, with strong stain resistance because the fiber barely absorbs. Less resilient than nylon under heavy traffic, so it suits bedrooms better than a main hallway. Entry to mid band.
- Triexta: stain resistance built into the strand rather than applied on top, with resilience close to nylon at a price closer to polyester. Strong pick for kids and pets. Mid to premium band.
- Nylon: still the durability benchmark. It recovers from crushing better than the alternatives, so it holds up on stairs, hallways, and family rooms used every day. Premium band, and worth it there.
- Wool: the natural option. Resilient, naturally flame resistant, and the highest price band by a wide margin. A specialty choice, not a default.
At our Mokena showroom we carry DreamWeaver and Shaw carpet, which between them cover the mainstream polyester, triexta, and nylon options above. Take samples home and see how a color behaves in your own light before you commit. Browse what we stock at our Mokena carpet store or visit the flooring showroom.
Stairs, Patterns, and the Surcharges People Do Not Expect
- Stairs. A staircase takes about as long to carpet as a mid-size bedroom, because every tread and riser is cut, wrapped, and fastened individually. HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) lists $10 to $25 per step for basic box stairs and $20 to $45 per stair where a handrail has spindles, plus extra fees for wrapping carpet over the sides of each stair. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing.
- Patterns. A patterned carpet has to be matched at every seam, which means extra material bought purely to line the pattern up, on top of normal waste. Solid and textured carpets do not carry this cost.
- Room shape and roll width. Rooms wider than the roll, L-shaped rooms, and long hallways all force seams and offcuts. Two rooms with identical square footage can quote differently for this reason alone.
Subfloor condition is the fourth variable. Carpet forgives minor imperfections in a way hard surface flooring does not, but a soft spot, a squeak, or water damage still has to be fixed first. That gets caught during the in-home measure, which is why we do it in person.
Carpet vs Luxury Vinyl Plank: Where the Price Argument Ends
Do not assume carpet is the budget answer. Compare the installed total for each floor in your actual rooms rather than two per-square-foot headlines. Once you are comparing a premium nylon against a mid-grade LVP, price stops deciding and the room decides.
- Carpet still wins in bedrooms, bonus rooms, theater rooms, and on stairs, where warmth, quiet, and a soft landing matter.
- Luxury vinyl plank wins where moisture, pets, and heavy cleaning are the reality: kitchens, entries, mudrooms, baths, and basements that have taken water.
- Many homes do both. A common layout is hard surface on the main level with carpet upstairs and on the stairs.
Weighing the two? Our luxury vinyl flooring installation page covers the product side, and our LVP cost guide for Mokena breaks down vinyl pricing the same way.
How to Read a Carpet Quote and Compare Two Fairly
- Per square foot or per square yard? One square yard is nine square feet, so divide a per-yard price by nine to get the per-square-foot price. Mixing units compares the wrong numbers.
- What pad is in this price? Ask for density and thickness, not “standard pad.”
- Is tear-out and haul away included? If it is not on the page, assume it is not in the price.
- How were stairs counted? Per step, and how many? Landings and pie treads belong on their own line.
- Where will the seams fall? A quote that cannot answer that has not really been measured.
- Who is physically installing this? The name on the quote and the name on the van are not always the same company.
Then compare one number: the total installed price for the complete job, including pad, tear-out, stairs, and transitions. Per-square-foot teasers are marketing. The total is the price.
Why a Local Showroom and a Big-Box Program Price Differently
- Who does the work. In a big-box installation program the store sells the carpet and a separate contractor is assigned the job, so the seller, the measurer, and the installers can be three different companies. Buying from a local showroom usually puts fewer parties between you and the finished floor.
- What the advertised price covers. Headline install offers use a narrow definition of installation. Pad, tear-out, haul away, furniture moving, and stairs get added after the measure, which is why the final number looks nothing like the ad.
- Who owns the warranty. The mill warrants the fiber, but the installation warranty belongs to whoever performed the work. If that party is hard to reach a year later, a callback becomes a harder phone call than it should be. Carpet occasionally needs a re-stretch after the first season, so knowing exactly who to call about it matters.
That does not make a big-box program wrong for every job. It does mean the two prices are not measuring the same product, and the cheaper per-square-foot line is often the more expensive finished floor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Reviewed by Matt Pehr, owner of The Floor 4U.
What is the average cost to carpet a 12 by 12 room?
HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts the average cost to carpet a 12 by 12 room, which is 144 square feet, at $250 to $1,100 installed for materials and labor. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Wall-to-wall carpet comes in rolls 12 to 15 feet wide, so a 12 foot wide room needs no seam to cover its width.
Does carpet installation include padding?
Not always, and it is the first thing to verify before comparing quotes. HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) lists pad at $0.25 to $1.00 per square foot as one part of an installed carpet price. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Ask for pad density and thickness in writing: carpet warranties specify a minimum pad, and installing under that spec can void the warranty.
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts carpeting a flight of 13 stairs at $150 to $600 for labor and materials, landing included, and notes that some installers charge $10 to $25 per step for basic box stairs or $20 to $45 per stair where a handrail has spindles. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Open-sided, curved, and pie-shaped winder treads cost more because each piece is cut and wrapped individually.
How much does it cost to have 1,500 sq ft of carpet installed?
HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts 1,500 square feet of carpet at $2,600 to $11,200 installed, materials and labor included. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Tear-out, stairs, and transitions are added on top if they are not already in the quote. A job that size always involves seams and waste, so the real number depends on room shapes, not just total area.
What time of year is carpet the cheapest?
Fall is when the biggest carpet sales occur, according to HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026). The same guide notes that leftover carpet remnants carry the largest discounts. A sale helps only if the quote still includes the pad, tear-out, stairs, and transitions, so compare full installed totals whichever month you buy.
How much does carpet installation cost in Mokena, IL?
The Floor 4U’s Mokena Google Business Profile lists carpet sales and installation from $100 for DreamWeaver carpet and from $199 for Shaw carpet (September 2026). Those are per-job starting minimums, not per-square-foot rates. Prices reflect Mokena, IL area rates as of 2026; actual quote depends on your project. The Bottom Line
As a starting point, HomeGuide’s carpet installation cost guide (checked October 2026) puts installed carpet at $2 to $8 per square foot. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Four things drive the final number: the fiber you pick, whether the old carpet has to come out, how many stairs you have, and how your rooms line up against the roll width.
