Carpet restretching pulls loose, wrinkled wall-to-wall carpet tight again and refastens it onto the tack strips around the edge of the room. It removes ripples, creases and sagging from carpet that is otherwise in decent shape, so you can keep the carpet instead of replacing it. The Floor 4U restretches carpet in Mokena, Frankfort and surrounding suburbs.

Signs Your Carpet Needs Restretching

Restretching fixes wall-to-wall carpet that has worked loose. These are the signs that usually point there:

  • Wrinkles, ripples or creases. The Carpet and Rug Institute tells homeowners to call their retailer if they notice wrinkles or ripples, because it may be necessary to professionally restretch the carpet.
  • Bubbles and buckles. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s installation standard lists wrinkling and buckling among the results of carpet that was not power stretched when it went in.
  • Sagging or a loose feel underfoot. HomeGuide describes restretching as the fix for loose wall-to-wall carpet, removing ripples, creases and sagging.
  • A trip hazard. A ridge in a hallway or at a doorway is easy to catch with a toe, and HomeGuide notes that stretching reduces the risk of tripping.
  • Loose seams or a gap at a transition. Our restretching and repair service also covers loose seams, and a stretch can pull carpet back to meet a new floor, as in the bathroom remodel described below.

What Causes Carpet to Wrinkle

Carpet wrinkles when it was never stretched tight enough, when the cushion under it is wrong, or with time and use. The published installation standards point to a few causes:

  • No power stretcher at install. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s residential installation standard states that the use of a power stretcher is mandatory, and that failure to power stretch may result in wrinkling and buckling.
  • The wrong cushion. Shaw’s stretch-in installation guide warns that an improper selection of cushion may result in buckling and wrinkling, and the CRI standard requires the cushion to conform to the carpet manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Very long rooms. Shaw notes that areas over 30 feet in length or width are difficult to stretch sufficiently and can potentially wrinkle.
  • Time, traffic and humidity. Angi reports that some homeowners in busy households or humid climates may need to restretch every five to ten years.

How a Restretch Works

HomeGuide defines carpet stretching as re-securing loose wall-to-wall carpeting by pulling and stretching it tight and refastening it onto tack strips around the perimeter of the room. The tool that does the pulling matters. The CRI standard calls the power stretcher mandatory and notes that a knee kicker is not for stretching carpet, and Shaw’s guide calls for a stretch of 1 to 1.5 percent in both directions with a power stretcher, using knee kickers only to move and position carpet.

A restretch usually involves a few steps beyond the stretch itself:

  • Moving furniture. HomeGuide says some or all furniture usually has to come off the carpet and away from the walls, and only minor touch up stretching is possible without moving it.
  • Tack strips. Damaged, loose or missing tack strips need replacement before restretching, per HomeGuide.
  • Seams and other damage. HomeGuide advises repairing carpet damage other than the wrinkles before restretching, and notes that seam splits add time and expense.
  • Older carpet. Restretching older carpet is often more challenging because of the increased risk of rips and tears, HomeGuide notes, and Berber takes more time than standard carpet.

If you are tempted to do it yourself with a rented knee kicker, that is the tool the CRI standard says is not for stretching carpet. A knee kicker moves and positions carpet; it does not apply the stretch the standard calls for.

Restretch or Replace?

HomeGuide calls carpet stretching worth the cost in most cases for carpet that has become loose or wrinkled but is otherwise in decent shape, and says replacement may make more sense for very old or badly damaged carpet. Age matters because older carpet carries an increased risk of rips and tears during a stretch.

That is the conversation we had with customers who wanted their carpet stretched. “Matt was so honest with his evaluation of the condition of our carpet being old it might rip during stretching or just buckle again. We decided to replace it and upgrade the look of our home,” Joyce B. wrote in a June 2025 Google review.

Room size, layout, carpet type and condition, the number of seams, tack strip repairs and how much furniture has to move all change the price, which is why a quote for your own rooms tells you more than any average.

How Long It Takes and How Long It Lasts

HomeGuide puts carpet stretching at 1 to 2 hours per room on average, with room size, layout and carpet condition setting the pace. Small fixes go faster. After a bathroom remodel, one customer needed the original carpet pulled closer to the new tile to hide the transition gap. “Matt had the job done in 15mins and looked great,” GJS J. wrote in an April 2025 Google review.

How long the result lasts varies by source. HomeGuide says stretching lasts 2 to 6 years when done correctly and that carpet quality affects how long any repair holds, while Angi reports that some busy or humid households restretch every five to ten years. Angi adds that regular maintenance helps keep carpet from loosening again; our carpet maintenance tips cover the basics.
