LVP can go directly over an existing hardwood floor when the wood is flat, sound, and fully adhered, when it is not glued down to a concrete slab, when the added height still clears your doors and transitions, and when the plank manufacturer’s installation guide allows it. Can You Put LVP Over Hardwood? The Honest Version

Going over an existing floor is not a shortcut we talk people out of. Demolition is the dirtiest, slowest, most disruptive part of a flooring job, and when the old floor is a legitimate substrate, leaving it down is the better project. Hardwood often is one: it is flat, and it is fastened down hard.

What makes hardwood different from tile is that a wood floor can be quietly failing while it still looks fine. Tile announces trouble by cracking. Wood cups half a millimeter at a time, and nobody walking across it in socks feels that. So this decision is less about whether it can be done and more about proving the wood is stable before it gets covered up.

Manufacturers write this out plainly. The COREtec Pro SPC residential installation guidelines, for a line we carry, allow installation over most existing hard-surface floor coverings provided that the existing floor surface is fully adhered, clean, flat, dry, structurally sound and free of deflection. Shaw’s residential SPC guidelines carry the same sentence and add the line that settles most job-site arguments: if there is any doubt as to suitability, the existing flooring should be removed, or an acceptable underlayment installed over it.

Read that as a checklist rather than a sentence and you have the whole decision. Most of it you can test in an afternoon. The condition that catches people out is the last one, because a hardwood floor can be perfectly sound and still be disqualified by what it is sitting on. Test 1: Is the Hardwood Flat, Sound, and Fully Adhered?

Flat is not the same as level. A room can slope an inch from one wall to the other and still be flat, and a rigid-core plank is fine with that. What it will not tolerate is local unevenness: a hump over a joist, a dished spot where a subfloor panel sagged, a board that sits proud of its neighbor.

Flatness is the one number printed in the installation guide, so we measure it rather than eyeball it. The COREtec Pro SPC guidelines require the subfloor to be flat within 3/16 inch in 10 feet, or 1/8 inch in 6 feet, and the Shaw residential SPC guidelines state the identical tolerance. A six-foot straightedge and a tape measure answer it in ten minutes. Tolerances differ by product, so the specification that governs your job is the one printed for the product you buy.

Sound and fully adhered is the second half. Walk the floor slowly and listen. Squeaks at a fastener are usually a screw away from being fixed. A board that moves under your weight, or a plank end that lifts when you rock on it, is not adhered any more, and a floating floor laid over it will follow that movement up as clicking and separated seams.

Cupping is the specific hardwood failure that turns a go-over into a tear-out. When board edges sit higher than board centers, the wood is picking up moisture from underneath: a flatness failure and a moisture warning in one symptom, and covering it does not stop it. Crowning, where the centers are high, usually means a cupped floor was sanded flat while still wet. Either one, and we look for the water before we quote a floor.

Then there is the failure no floor covering can fix. If the floor flexes or bounces when you cross it, that is subfloor or joist deflection, which both guides name as disqualifying. It is repaired from below, before anyone talks about new flooring.

Test 2: Is That Wood Floor Sitting on Wood, or on Concrete?

This is the test that quietly disqualifies the most floors around here, and it has nothing to do with the condition of the wood.

Both guides are blunt about it. The COREtec Pro SPC existing-floor-coverings section says do not install over wood floors adhered to concrete. Its subfloor section repeats the rule from the other direction: do not install over sleeper construction subfloors or wood subfloors applied directly over concrete, and do not install material over wood subfloors that lay directly on concrete or over dimensional lumber or plywood used over concrete. The Shaw residential guidelines carry the same prohibition word for word.

The reason is vapor. Concrete gives off moisture for the life of the slab, so a wood floor glued or laid over one is already in a damp sandwich, and a waterproof plank floated on top adds a second lid. Moisture that used to escape through the wood has nowhere to go, and the failure shows up as cupping, adhesive release, and at worst mold under a floor nobody can see.

That rule lands hard on the housing stock we work in. Split-levels and slab ranches across Mokena, New Lenox and Homer Glen have lower levels poured on grade, and any engineered wood, parquet, or wood-over-sleeper floor that went down on that slab is exactly the case those guides exclude. Basement rec rooms in the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions are the same story. There the honest answer is that the wood comes up and the new floor goes down on prepared concrete, which the LVP handles well. Our Mokena location page covers what we install where.

How do you tell? Pull a floor register and look at the cut edge of the opening, or take up a threshold. If you see joists and a plywood deck, you are on a wood subfloor. If you see concrete an inch or two under the finished floor, stop and get somebody to look at it before you order material.

Test 3: Where Does the Added Height Go?

Nothing is wrong with the old floor in this test. The problem is arithmetic. Keeping the hardwood means the new floor starts at the top of the old one, and every threshold, door, appliance and stair in the room has to live with that.

Interior doors are the easy part. A door that will not swing gets taken off and trimmed, which is routine. Door jambs are routine too: the Shaw guidelines direct the installer to undercut all doorjambs so the plank can slide underneath rather than being scribed around them, which is what makes the finished edge look built-in rather than caulked.

The expensive ones are the fixtures that cannot be trimmed. A dishwasher sits in a fixed opening under a countertop, and if the floor under it rises, the machine may not come back out for service without the floor being cut. An exterior door that opens inward has a sill you cannot shave. Stairs are the ones people miss: raise the upper landing and the top riser is now shorter than every other riser in the flight, which is a trip point and a code problem.

Transitions into adjoining rooms are the last piece. Where the new LVP meets carpet, tile, or a hardwood floor you are keeping, the height change is handled with a transition profile. Two details matter there, and both are in the installation guides: the floating floor needs its expansion space at every vertical surface, a quarter inch on the SPC products we install, and wall moldings and transition strips must never be fastened through the planks. A transition screwed into a floating floor pins it, and a pinned floating floor buckles.

Moisture, Underlayment, and Radiant Heat Under an Old Wood Floor

Moisture is the risk that makes going over a wood floor different from going over tile, because tile does not care about water and wood does. Never float a waterproof plank over a wood floor that is actively wet. The plank is fine. The wood underneath is not, and you have just sealed it in.

The most common source is below the floor, not on it. The COREtec guidelines require basements and crawl spaces to be dry, and call for 6 mil black polyethylene covering 100 percent of the crawl space earth, at least 18 inches of clearance to the underside of the joists, and perimeter venting equal to 1.5 percent of the crawl space area. An open dirt crawl space is a humidifier, and it is why some floors cup every August.

Underlayment over hardwood is simpler than people expect. Do not apply sheet plastic over a wood subfloor: both guides say so explicitly, and it is the exact mistake that traps vapor in the wood. The poly film step belongs to floating installations over concrete. Most rigid-core products we sell arrive with an attached pad, and a second underlayment in a residential job cannot exceed 3 mm. Crumb rubber is not an acceptable underlayment under resilient flooring at all.

Radiant heat under the old wood changes the sequence rather than the answer. Both guides require a minimum half-inch separation between the heating components and the flooring, require the system to be on and operating for at least two weeks before installation to drive off residual moisture, want the temperature dropped to 65 degrees F three days before the floor goes down and then raised afterwards in 5 degree steps, and cap the operating temperature so it never exceeds 85 degrees F. What the Installation Guide Actually Requires

Homeowners ask whether going over the old floor voids the warranty. A manufacturer warranty covers the product, and it assumes the product went down on a substrate the guide approves. That is not a formality. It is the list from the top of this article: fully adhered, clean, flat, dry, sound, free of deflection, not wood over concrete, inside the flatness tolerance.

The guides say the quiet part out loud. Shaw’s residential guidelines state that Shaw Industries does not warrant, and is not responsible for, damage to floor covering due to moisture related issues, and both documents put the responsibility for determining whether the subfloor is cured and moisture mitigated on the flooring contractor, adding that failure to mitigate moisture may result in failure of the flooring material and render the warranty void.

So the practical answer is that going over hardwood does not void anything by itself. Going over the wrong hardwood does. Ask for the installation guide for the exact product before you buy it and read the existing-floor-coverings section. It is a page long, it is free, and it is the document the installer is supposed to be following.

When Tearing the Hardwood Out Is the Better Job

There are five situations where we tell people to take the wood out, and one of them is not a technical failure at all.

  • The wood is cupped, crowned, or gapping. That is moisture, and it has to be found and stopped before any floor goes down over it.
  • The floor bounces. Deflection gets fixed from underneath. Nothing laid on top helps.
  • The wood is on concrete. Adhered wood, parquet, or a sleeper system over a slab is a prohibited substrate in both guides.
  • The height will not work. When the fix list runs to an exterior door sill, a dishwasher that has to come out through a cut floor, and a short top riser, demolition is often cheaper than the workarounds.
  • You want the wood back one day. This is the honest one. A hardwood floor you cover is a hardwood floor you are paying to store. If the boards have life in them, refinishing the hardwood is usually the better spend, and we will say so even though it is the smaller job for us.

Tear-out is not the disaster people picture, either. Nailed strip hardwood over a plywood deck comes up reasonably well; glued-down wood is slower and messier. Either way the old material has to leave the property, which is a separate line on any honest quote, and our page on flooring removal and disposal covers that part. Budget mentally for what turns up underneath, because a subfloor covered since 1978 occasionally needs a panel replaced.

What We Check on a Free In-Home Estimate

This is a decision that is genuinely hard to make from photographs, which is why the visit is free and why we bring samples to the house instead of asking you to imagine the color.

Here is the actual sequence. We straightedge the floor in several directions and note anywhere it falls outside the manufacturer’s flatness tolerance. We walk it listening for movement and rock on suspect boards. We read the board profile for cupping and crowning under raking light, because a low-angle light shows what an overhead fixture hides. We pull a register or a threshold to see what the floor is built on and how many layers are down, and we look at the crawl space or basement below. Then we measure the finished height against every door, jamb, sill, appliance opening, stair riser and transition.

Then you get a straight answer with the reason attached: go over it, go over it after this specific repair, or take it out. Can I lay luxury vinyl plank over hardwood floors?

Usually yes, if the hardwood is flat, clean, dry, fully adhered, structurally sound and free of deflection, which is the condition both the COREtec Pro SPC and Shaw residential SPC installation guidelines set for going over an existing hard-surface floor. The exceptions are wood adhered to concrete, wood over sleepers, and any floor that is cupping or moving.

What is the best flooring to put over old hardwood?

A rigid-core luxury vinyl plank is the usual answer, because it floats, it is waterproof on the surface, and its stiff core bridges minor unevenness in the old boards better than a thin flexible plank does. Laminate can work on the same substrate. Anything glued directly to old finished hardwood is a poor idea, since the bond is only as good as the old finish.

Do you have to remove hardwood before installing vinyl plank?

Not usually, as long as the wood is a sound, flat, fully adhered substrate on a wood subfloor above grade. Removal becomes necessary when the boards are cupped or loose, when the floor deflects underfoot, when the wood is adhered to a concrete slab or laid over sleepers, or when the added height will not clear doors, appliances, or the top stair riser.

Does LVP over hardwood need underlayment?

Often none is needed, because most rigid-core planks come with an attached pad. If a second underlayment is used in a residential installation, the COREtec Pro SPC guidelines cap it at 3 mm thick and exclude crumb rubber entirely. Do not lay sheet plastic over a wood subfloor: both guides prohibit it, and it traps vapor in the wood underneath.

Will the old hardwood boards show through the new vinyl plank?

They can, and it is called telegraphing. Board edges that sit proud, cupped boards, and gaps wide enough for a plank to bridge nothing will all read through under raking light within a year. The defense is the flatness check first, filling or flattening what fails it, and a thicker rigid core rather than a thin flexible plank.

Can you install LVP over hardwood in a basement?

Almost never over the wood. Basement wood floors are usually adhered to the slab or laid on sleepers, and both the COREtec Pro SPC and Shaw residential SPC guidelines prohibit installing over wood floors adhered to concrete and over sleeper construction. The wood comes up and the plank goes down on prepared concrete, which is a normal and durable basement installation.

Does installing LVP over hardwood void the warranty?

Not by itself. Manufacturer warranties assume the product was installed on an approved substrate, and both guides list existing hard-surface floors as approved when they are fully adhered, clean, flat, dry, sound and free of deflection. The same documents warn that failure to mitigate moisture may render the warranty void, so the substrate decision is the warranty decision.

How much does removing hardwood cost compared with going over it?

HomeGuide, captured 2026-09-05, puts old floor removal at $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot depending on material, and luxury vinyl flooring at $4 to $16 per square foot installed. These are published national ranges, not The Floor 4U pricing. Leaving a sound floor down avoids the removal line, which is why the substrate test is worth running before you budget.
